Aglou Plage and the Dentist.

22nd and 23rd April
Sunday

A day to ourselves today, Lahoucine is playing football so we can't meet up with him which leaves us free to let the day make itself up for us. We take the day as it comes. A sunny, hot morning turns into a cloudy, cool afternoon. As the change is taking place, we set out for a hike up the hills surrounding us. It's a demanding landscape. There hasn't been any rain here of significance this winter and the vegetation shows it.

It's very dry
We follow the river bed upstream past the new refuse dump where we spot a resident, perhaps the guardian, sorting out the waste. He seems to have a small dwelling made of scrap in amongst the rubbish. He waves and gets on with his chore.
This dry cascade Krysia is climbing up was a raging torrent two years ago. We don't think water has been here this winter.

No flash floods please
Goats and sheep have to eat here but with the vegetation in the state it's in, they can't be getting what they need. I catch movement out of the corner of my eye and spot a deep red brown fox running away from us, short legs, long bushy tail. I try to shout out to Krysia but the wind takes my voice away and the wild animal disappears over the skyline.

This landscape was as green as Wales the last time we were here! There are signs of growth, small flowers and the occasional green leaf. No doubt a good rainfall would bring these bushes back to life as the desert has a way of waiting for its water. But it's nearly May and that means summer.

Aglou town in the background

An upturned tree stump looks like a giant Squid monster as we approach but turns out to be quite harmless!

So dry
A path through the bushes leads us back down to the coast, pointing almost exactly at Lahoucines cliff face cave. It gets warmer as we descend as there is a cold wind blowing..
Clouds but no rain
New boats are waiting for caulking and painting. The little harbour will turn into a hive of activity as soon as the swell drops.
Mmm, so this is how you make a wooden boat
And right outside the campsite, another rock formation from mars, which can de as wild as Niagara falls, on a small scale of course, is as dry as the rest of this place.

Another empty cascade
This gorge was a fuming cauldron of thick red water two years ago, turning the sea red and cutting the beach in half!

And the view out of our window at sunset, perched over the cliffs we get a fine view of Aglou Plage and the beach which has been packed again today with Moroccan families making the most of this Sunday.

Monday 23rd

A sunny warm day, which is nice because I've got a cold, snivelling all over the place! Poor me. But self pity aside, I have to find a dentist today and Layla the receptionist tells me who she would go to in Tiznit. Good enough for me as she has a lovely set off teeth. We pack up and pay, arriving at the dentist about 10.30 where I'm received with pleasure and asked to wait my turn. Krysia decides to wait in the van which is lucky as they have separate waiting rooms here for men and women! I have two hour wait which is broken up for me by chatting with a pleasant lad whose studying physics and alternative energy in Agadir. Mostafa was a pleasure to converse with and we got quite heated on the subjects of solar power and politics, as he says ' we have enough sun to power the planet'  ' why aren't we using it? '
The young dentist says I need two visits, this one to treat the tooth and a second to fill it? I take his word for it and after two xrays and some expert attention, I'm sent on my way, to return on Friday. 400 dirhams the price, about 30 quid, bargain.
It's 1.30pm by the time I leave and after a bit of shopping, we go back to Aglou to say fairwell to Lahoucine.

We think he has probably been waiting all day for us and for that we are sorry but he carries on being the perfect host and gives us all his hospitality. Even a gift from his mum, a necklace of sharks tooth! As we have to come back to Tiznit on Friday, we suggest a cup of tea in the afternoon, if he's not busy. Fishing starts this week as the swell is due to drop!
We drive back to Tiznit to stay the night as we want to get some more tajines from the tajine mountain.
Very tired, we settle in for the night
lots of love
