6th and 7th March
Tuesday is spent around the farm, as our plan has been to keep one day here and one day out ' there' !
Here, behind the gates of the farm, is a quiet world of birdsong, breezes and water flowing. The lush orange groves and accompanying vegetable crops are kept well watered by miles of plastic pipes, drip feeding everything, all day long. We assume the mountains all around supply this liquid gold as rain is completely absent and the surrounding areas are dust bowl dry unless irrigated.
Wednesday 7th March
Out, up and into the High Atlas.
And up we go, in true Atlas fashion
The road leaves the flat Sous valley and quickly climbs up into the hills and then mountains. the change of scenery is starling and the warmth of the local people infectious, as waves of welcome come from anyone we pass. Some run and hide as we climb higher, we respectfully refrain from obvios photos of the locals.
A boulder seems to have eaten a car as we arrive at this mountain village of Afensou
Soon we find a good spot to relax and have a picnic, take some short walks and investigate the area we are in. It is so beautiful here with the highest mountain above us , Jbel Aoulime, reaching 3555 metres. We decide not to climb it today as it's a bit hot!
I make friends with some local lads
The villages are so lush, with water running down the valleys that they hug, making them even more productive than the artificially fed Sous Farms. The irrigation channels work by gravity here, with an intricate maze of waterways feeding the terraced fields.
It is a journey into an unspoilt valley we have taken today. Apart from us, not a tourist in sight, locals pleased that we have made the journey. Little children scamper and hide from the hairy beast that drives the big blue bus!
The weather has been amazing again today and that helps make this day out, one to remember, or is that another one?
Mum has really enjoyed her mountain journey and we've really enjoyed bringing her here. Adventures are the spice of life.
Here's to life with spice
all the best
lots of love
The Beynons
